Honorable MEC Meyer marked Mandela Day by visiting Pemary Ridge Primary School in Reservoir Hills to clean and paint the school's jungle gym. The school, under the leadership of Principal Mr D. R. Sewsunker, sustained significant damage from severe storms and flooding in 2022 and continues to face financial and structural challenges.


Grade 7 learners and Counselor Alicia Kissoon joined the effort, showcasing a strong community spirit and collective dedication to restoring the school to its former state.

On Mandela Day, learners from Pemary Ridge Primary School proudly showcased their coding skills in a local tournament designed to celebrate innovation and technology. Grade 6 and 7 students participated in the event, which was held to honor Nelson Mandela's legacy by empowering young minds through education.The tournament provided a platform for these young coders to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities and creativity. Competing against other schools in the region, the learners worked tirelessly on various coding challenges, displaying impressive teamwork and determination.


Principal Mr Sewsunker expressed pride in the students' achievements, stating, "Our learners have shown great enthusiasm and dedication to learning new skills. The Mathematics Club was created in response to a growing interest among students for a platform where they could engage with mathematics beyond the classroom. Mr. DR Sewsunker the school principal, explains, “The aim is to make mathematics more accessible and enjoyable for students. We want them to see math not just as a subject, but as a tool for understanding the world.”


The club meets weekly during break. During these sessions, students work on a variety of activities ranging from mathematics games, solving challenging puzzles and discussing famous mathematical problems, to preparing for math competitions and Olympiads. The club’s inclusive environment ensures that all students, regardless of their mathematical ability, feel welcome. The focus is on growth and learning at your own pace.

Looking ahead, the club has ambitious plans. They hope to organize inter-school math competitions, participate in national and international Olympiads, and perhaps even host a school-wide Mathematics Day. There are also discussions about creating a student-led math tutoring program to help peers struggling with the subject. “We’re just getting started, but the enthusiasm from the students is incredible,” says Mr. DR Sewsunker. “I’m confident this club will not only improve our students’ mathematical abilities but also foster a deeper appreciation for the subject.”

As the Mathematics Club continues to grow, it promises to be a cornerstone of Pemary Ridge Primary School’s extracurricular offerings, inspiring students to explore the fascinating world of mathematics.

The event was a resounding success, with parents, teachers, and fellow students supporting the budding entrepreneurs, making the day both educational and enjoyable.


Entrepreneurs Day is an integral part of the school's curriculum, aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility, innovation, and financial literacy among students. The Grade 7 learners certainly rose to the occasion, leaving everyone impressed with their enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. As the day came to a close, the learners walked away with a gdeeper understanding of what it takes to run a business, along with a sense of accomplishment for their hard work.
